What Is A Side Sewer?
The side sewer is what’s referred to as the section of piping starting at the exterior of your foundation and ending at the city sewer main, that removes waste from your home to be taken to a sewage treatment facility. Not every side sewer is plumbed in using the same materials however, and while some of the piping commonly used will last a very long time, others will reliably fail causing sewage backups into the residence attached to it.
Since plumbing was first invented, pre-dating the Egyptians, countless innovative types of pipe has been used for both supplying water and removing unwanted waste. After the introduction of iron and steel, longevity of plumbing systems became a reality.
Even with the introduction of iron piping, economics have always played a part on available materials. Because of this, not every side sewer is plumbed using the same materials, and while some of the piping will last a very long time, others will reliably fail. The most common indicator of a failing side sewer is the repeat occurrance of a sewer backing up into the residence attached to it.
