What Is Clay Piping?

Less and less common by the day, clay was an effective waste pipe material used for centuries. It has been used in ancient civilizations up until the 1970’s when PVC became the best material in production.

Much like concrete, clay pipes are prone to cracking and breaking as the ground shifts. Erosion can also wear away at the bottom of the pipes and roots are able to grow through the cracks. The roots will cause backups into the home and will need careful attention to return proper flow without pulling the roots through the pipe and collapse the weakened line.

Clay pipes have served homes for many years without giving out, but after all these years most are at the end of their life. Most clay waste piping is in need of complete replacement or be inspected regularly to ensure its integrity.
